The Cal. King bed is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular (Eastern) King bed. David Bergeson from Concord, California invented the California King mattress in 1982. Legend has it that Bergeson had extremely long legs and short arms and had trouble reaching for his wife during the night, so he developed a narrower longer bed. Legend also has it that a few years later, he remarried and invented what is now known as the California Queen mattress. Talk about a busy guy!
